Research at SHA

Principal research themes

The interdisciplinary doctoral program in Applied Human Sciences welcomes all research projects, provided that it be interdisciplinary research, applied and engaging the social sciences. It thus provides a haven for researchers who aspire to greater scientific freedom of  expression: one can raise questions that are impossible to ask from a single discipline. It also makes it possible for greater "crossborder" circulation : the researcher goes into any disciplinary territory, regardless of borders, whatever the ''Disciplinary Property Title'' claimed, at the sole discretion of the scientific needs of the project.

Publications

The SHA review: an educational undertaking

The publication Chantiers de l’intervention en sciences humaines : interdisciplinarité pratique et action professionnelle (a bilingual publication), notably allows doctoral students who desire it to do an editorial internship as editor in chief, all under the supervision of the founder and chief scientist (Violaine Lemay). The authors have fulfilled the requirements of the doctoral seminar on intervention. Desiring to counter common criticism of science education, the work required during this compulsory education is rooted in the real world of academic research: it takes on the form of directly publishable scientific articles, forming the contents of this annual publication.

Theses

Since the program's inception, more than 60 doctoral researchers have supported a thesis in Applied Human Sciences. The combinations of disciplines and angles of study are extremely varied. For example, the authors are interested for the most part in groups of people in vulnerable situations and their ability to react. They open new avenues of intervention on the scientific or professional planes.

Research centers and research groups affiliated to the program

The interdisciplinary doctoral program in Applied Human Sciences maintains close ties with 15 research centers and research groups, some of whom are themselves meeting places for researchers of several university-level institutions in Montreal. These centers play a key role throughout the studies of doctoral candidates as well as when they are integrated into a research or work environment.
